"Not forgiving someone is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die."
Forgiveness is defined as a conscious, deliberate decision to release the feeling of resentment or vengeance toward a person or group who has harmed and hurt you, regardless of whether they deserve your forgiveness. Maybe it is not resentment by just overwhelming pain and hurt.
We as humans, no matter where we are from, are all emotional and social beings seeking human connection, a need that is perhaps all that more important when we have been wronged.
That is why Forgiveness can be challenging, especially when the offending party offers either an insincere apology, no apology or even an admission of guilt. However, it's often the healthiest path forward.
Forgiveness is a process, meaning that it takes time and isn't always easy. Making a conscious effort, to let go of something hurtful, that has happened to you by releasing negative thought patterns, anger, resentment, and pain.
By working through this emotional process, you are making an active choice to no longer suffer from the harm that was done to you.
It is also very important to understand what forgiveness isn't. When you forgive, you do not mean forgetting, nor does it mean condoning or excusing offenses. Though forgiveness can at times help with repairing a damaged relationship, it does not obligate you to reconcile with the person who harmed you. Sometimes it is more important to protect your peace, do not let anyone tell you there is anything wrong with that.
Just remember that forgiveness brings the forgiver peace of mind and frees them from anger and hurt. It involves letting go of negative feelings you have been holding on to.
When we can forgive it empowers you to recognize the pain you suffered without letting the pain define you, which helps you to heal and move on with your life.
It also becomes clear that forgiveness is freedom - freedom from the past and even from future pain. By taking life's pitfalls as opportunities to grow instead of a place to dwell in hopelessness, you are taking the steps of reclaiming your life and power!
